The page so beautifully sets the tone for the book. I love the first page - the "Waking Up" illustration by Aurélia Durand. What’s your favourite page of the book and why? I loved highlighting the resistance of the folx who fought for justice throughout history. I loved being able to share the story of Stephen Lawrence with young readers. Researching and writing about the Grenfell Tower fire and teasing out the misuse and abuse of power by institutions was something I didn't know a lot about. I loved writing the history chapters because I love history and there's so much truth we have not been taught or told. What’s your favourite fact that you learnt from creating the book? Ideal for politically-minded young people but deserving of a place in every library collection, we're delighted to have Tiffany provide further insight into creating this powerful read. On that list of incredible information books in the age 13-16 category, we're thrilled to have Tiffany Jewell's This Book is Anti-Racist (illustrated by Aurélia Durand, published by Frances Lincoln).Ī clear-headed, informative and modern treatise on racism from all angles, this important read doesn't flinch from tough while still remaining optimistic and encouraging. The intent is to empower all to “disrupt racism” and become involved in the “anti-racism” movement. Anti-racism is "how we and those among us get free from centuries of living in a radicalized society that keeps us separate and oppressed.” The book is intended to help each of us learn about, or enhance our skills in, activism and encourage the reader to learn about onesself and others.
It is making a commitment to resisting unjust laws, policies, and racist attitudes. “Anti-racism is actively working against racism.
Sections include: 1) Understanding Identities - who you identify with 2) Making Sense of the World - Prejudice and History, 3) Taking Action and Responding to Racism - Solidarity, Taking Action, Disruption and 4) Solidarity Against Racism - Building Relationships, Loving Yourself and Privilege.The author notes that the book is meant to be read in order for maximum benefit. Although specifically aimed at grades 6 - 10, all will benefit from reading it.
